SLink Features

The following list of features should help you to decide if SLink might be of interest for you. A more complete document can be found in the download section.

SLink Project
SLink provides a new project type for working with SAS® resources. By using the New-Project-Wizard you can create a new SLink project.

Connection to a local SAS® session
The SLink plug-in starts a local SAS® session and connects to it. You have to configure the place of the sas.exe and the port which SLink will use for the communication. Select Windows > Preferences and look under SLink Server > SAS(r) Config.

SLink Session Explorer view

This is your central access point to the main SLink functionalities. This view provides you with details of the current SLink session. To open this view go to Window > Show View > Other and select SLink Views > SLink Session Explorer.

The Session Explorer is like the Navigator View and will show you all workspace resources. In addition it has a node called SAS Environment. There you will find all assigned libraries and may explore the contents of each library.

SLink project configuration
A project specific configuration page lets you set up libraries and source folders for each project.

SAS® Base program execution
Any SAS® base program in the workspace can be executed in the current session. Just select the resource and choose Save and execute from the SLink menu. Alternatively you may just press F9.

Like in the SAS® IDE you may select any piece of text in any file and submit the selected text by pressing F9.

Colored log and output file display
All output (log and print) is visible in the Console View. Use the Console View menu to switch between the log and print outputs.

SCL program or class compilation
One of the main reasons for developing SLink was the need to have SCL program code in plain ASCII text outside the SAS IDE. Thus being able to use Eclipse and CVS to store and share the code with other developers.

Compile error and warnings list

SLink uses Eclipse problem markers. Each compile problem and each warning is listed in the Problems View. A double-click on a problem will open an editor and jump to the corresponding line. In addition you will find the compile log in the Console View.

SCL program execution
SCL programs may be executed the same way as SAS® programs. Select or open the program to execute and press F9 or choose Execute from the context menu.

Catalog synchronization
If you delete, move or rename SCL resources inside a source catalog of a SLink project the plug-in will try to synchronize your change with the binary catalog. A resource that no longer exists will be removed from the catalog. This includes CLASS resources for removed SCL classes.

Rudimentary dataset viewer
A double-click on any dataset will open a very simple viewer that shows all columns and up to 5000 rows of data from the selected dataset.

Support for external viewer utility
Under Window > Preferences > SLink Preferences you may enter the path to an external utility called "SAS System Viewer". This utility is able to display datasets in small viewer application. You may download this utility from the SAS® web site.

Once configured you can start this utility by selecting External Viewer from the context menu of any dataset.
